With the significant shift toward remote work arrangements in the US over the last decade, millions of home-based businesses have sprouted up, and among them, a ton of new “coaches.” There’s nothing wrong with that, but you probably don’t want to leave the investment in your leadership development up to chance.

Few coaches who’ve more recently hung up their shingle (picture an “open for business” sign) are professionally trained, experienced in coaching best practices, AND have prior leadership experience in corporate America.  So choosing the right leadership coach and getting started can feel a bit daunting, but don’t lose hope.  You’ve come this far, which means you’ve probably already developed a growth mindset, and that’s half the battle. Yay for you!

Here are a few questions you may want to consider when looking for a Leadership Coach…

Do they…

  1. have former leadership experience, ideally in a similar sector (public, private, non-profit)?
  2. have strong communication skills and can easily ask great questions that bring about self-awareness?
  3. have a process that sets the tone for success? A straightforward onboarding and detailed intake questionnaire establishes the relationship for faster results.
  4. abide by a code of ethics? Be sure you see the International Coaching Federation’s (ICF) code referenced on their website or in the onboarding info.
  5. clarify the difference between a coach and a counselor with you?
  6. have clearly stated values with which you can align?
  7. lead their coaching sessions with empathy and flexibility?
  8. have a genuine interest in your growth through the achievement of your goals?
  9. tailor their coaching style to your preferred learning style?
  10. have knowledge of and licensure for various personal and professional assessment tools?

Most of all, your coach should understand you have a lot on your plate as a leader. If you come with a growth mindset, your coach should be willing to meet you where you’re at, earn your trust, and have your complete well-being in mind.

Cheers to your transformational leadership journey!
